Pakistan’s automotive industry, which has been struggling in recent months, saw a welcome increase in car sales last month. According to the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), car sales jumped 12% compared to the previous month, with 10,515 vehicles sold in April 2024 compared to 9,381 in March 2024.

This positive trend is even more significant when looking at year-over-year sales. Compared to April 2023, car sales soared by an impressive 135%. This significant rise is likely due to the recent stability of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar.

Furthermore, motorbike and three-wheeler sales also showed positive growth, with a 15% increase last month. Atlas Honda had the highest sales and saw a particularly strong performance, with a 19% jump in sales compared to March. Meanwhile, Pak Suzuki also experienced a modest increase of 5%.

However, not all sectors of the industry saw growth in sales, as truck and bus sales took a significant hit, dropping 27% compared to the previous month.

Looking at individual companies, Toyota Pakistan saw a 21% increase in sales, while Honda Atlas experienced a steeper decline of 54%. Pak Suzuki Motors Company enjoyed a substantial boost of 46%, and Hyundai Nishat sales grew by 18%.

It’s important to note that the report does not include sales figures for Kia Lucky Motors, Master Changan Motors, Regal Motors, MG Motors, and Al-Haj Proton, as they are not members of PAMA.

In terms of specific car models, PSMC’s Alto was the clear leader, with 4,786 units sold. Other popular choices included the Suzuki Cultus, Wagon R, Swift, and Bolan. The Toyota Corolla and Yaris were also strong sellers, followed by the Fortuner and Hilux SUVs. Honda City and Civic models remained popular choices, while Hyundai Nishat saw success with the Elantra, Sonata, Porter, and Tucson.
